I was thrilled to find out that my new Raita throw was featured at Vancouver Sun holiday gift guide 2025! I am in a good company with other locally featured products from handmade ceramics to natural cleaners. The curated list of functional and decorative homeware features thoughtful and timeless holiday gift ideas.

The Raita Throw by Vancouver designer Petra Kaksonen is what happens when Scandinavian cool meets West Coast warmth. Drawing on her Finnish heritage, Kaksonen combines natural influences and contemporary craftsmanship. Made from recycled cotton and available in red, green or beige this throw is a must-have accessory for modern West Coast homes.

Every year, cotton-blend yarns are left unused in the textile industry — the byproduct of shifting markets, production changes, and inevitable miscalculations. USA-based In2Green doesn't see it as surplus as waste, they see it as possibility. This belief comes to life in their newest designer Deadstock Blanket Collection.

Reclaimed cotton blends are transformed into beautifully designed, lasting pieces such as striking Raita throw by Finnish-born, Vancouver-based designer Petra Kaksonen, whose clean, modern aesthetic is grounded in nature, tradition, and the quiet harmony of Scandinavian design.

The Raita throw’s rhythmic flow brings movement, depth, and warmth to any room, turning limited and leftover materials into a vibrant statement piece. Petra’s background in both design and textiles adds a thoughtful balance of form and function, celebrating timeless style while honoring sustainable craft.

The impact of this approach is as intentional as the design:

  • 75% recycled cotton / 25% polyester, spun from pre-consumer tee-shirt clippings and up to 22 recycled water bottles

  • 2,100 gallons of water saved per blanket through a resource-conscious process

  • Reduced carbon footprint by designing with reclaimed yarns instead of new fiber

By embracing the constraints of deadstock materials, we not only reduce environmental impact — we also unlock creativity. The Raita throw exemplifies how sustainability and beauty can move in rhythm, proving that what’s left can truly become what’s next. In2Green gives cotton a second life, creating pieces that wrap you in warmth while caring for the world we share.

Finnish designer, Petra Kaksonen, has been turning heads in recent years with her colorful, contemporary patterns that have been showing up on everything from pillows and rugs to bags and bedding. Now, in collaboration with Pillow Décor, Petra is making her mark with a new line of Japandi-inspired throw pillows that she calls the Boketto Collection.

For those still unfamiliar with the term, Japandi refers to the increasingly popular fusion of Nordic hygge and Japanese Wabi-sabi design. It is a fusion that takes the common Scandinavian and Japanese appreciation of simplicity, nature, and the beauty of imperfection, and reflects them with a design aesthetic in often subtle but unique ways.

Printed on a soft, light gray felt fabric, the Boketto Pillow Collection features bold, minimalist patterns that are uncomplicated and easy to incorporate into a wide range of decorating styles. Like the Japanese word Boketto, which loosely translates as ’the act of losing oneself in a distant gaze’, Petra has created patterns that soften and relax the eyes.

“Having lived in Japan and grown up in Finland, nature has always played an important part in my designs – finding beauty in simplicity and enhancing our everyday life and rituals. I often work with paper, creating cutout collages that I use as the basis for my designs. I love playing with color and scale, leaving room for surprises,” explains Petra.

“For the Boketto Collection, we wanted to create pillows that bring warmth, comfort and cheerful Nordic elegance to any space – from tiny cabins to family rooms and larger gathering spaces,” adds Petra.

Petra Kaksonen is one of several designers featured on PillowDecor.com. Pillow Décor supports independent artists and designers, helping them manufacture unique throw pillows that can be marketed to both retail and wholesale buyers. Petra’s Boketto Pillow Collection features four unique designs in four colors and can be viewed and purchased online at PillowDecor.com or PetraKaksonen.com
